QKL is now offering qualification training specifically for those staff involved in the care of people with dementia. This is an essential qualification for employers to be able to show CQC Inspectors that they have a ‘dementia’ expert’ on the team when working with people with dementia

Currently 700,000 people in the UK have dementia and this figure is expected to double over the next few decades. The Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia will help to improve health and care services supporting individuals diagnosed with dementia.

Who is this qualification for?

The qualification in awareness of dementia is aimed at occupational areas across all service user groups and ages, working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies. This also includes healthcare/care assistants, support/key workers, family support workers and team leaders/first line supervisors.

What sort of things do they cover?

  • The Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia covers:

  • basic knowledge of dementia care
  • person centred planning and understanding equality
  • advanced knowledge of dementia care
  • communication
  • administration of medication

Delivery

Learners are generally expected to be operating in a setting with people diagnosed with dementia. The Level 3 award can be delivered off site and all evidence is assignment based. QKL will run a series of workshops to deliver the training that learners will need to set a firm foundation of knowledge for the completion of the assignments.

Selection and Recruitment of Learners.

We can offer:

  • Briefing sessions for managers and potential learners on how this qualification can help to raise awareness about Dementia
  • Written information on requirements and how learners can progress through their qualification and ways in which managers can support the process.

Programme Outline

QKL has designed a four day programme to cover all the knowledge requirements for this award. We suggest that this is run over a month so that learners have enough time to work on the assignments that form the assessment for this knowledge based qualification.

Our Approach

We work in a very structured way giving lots of direction and support – if learners do their job well and are prepared to put in a bit of their own time then we will give them the support they need to achieve the qualification in the timescale given. Recruits to this programme need to be made aware that this is a qualification form City and Guilds that requires them to complete written assignments that will be marked using a Nationally Agreed Marking Guide.

There is no requirement for the award to have any work based competency assessment

We have an excellent record at getting able and committed learners through qualifications. Our success rate across London and the South east is high with all learners who met the criteria completing within the timescale agreed.
